What is a finial?

All table lamps with lamp shades have long used finials to secure the lamp shade to the harp of the lamp. A finial has a conventional base that screws onto the stud of a harp. Historically finials have been plain, but today there is a trend toward decorative finials. Today’s finials include cartoon characters or other superheroes, beach motifs, animals, dragonflies, sports equipment, ballet shoes, decorative crystal, brass figurines, holiday themes, the list goes on and on.
